The seaside is part of our national persona which, for many, evokes fond childhood memories and provides an ever present draw to come back if only each time for a while.
The distinctive character of our seaside towns is what makes them beautiful and enjoyable. At their heart lies a harbour, each a colourful socio‐economic tapestry with stories to tell, full of working boats, pleasure craft, weekend breakers and holiday makers.
For most people seaside towns are somewhere to go on holiday or for an occasional day out, to explore attractions, discover their history and participate in the seasonal hustle and bustle. The idea of living in one may seem like a dream and regardless, once the warm summer days are over, they are certainly no longer an obvious destination to visit.
For it is those that live in seaside towns, who understand that they are not just for summer. The days may grow shorter and colder but the scenery changes; fresh conditions bring a different but equally stunning palette of colours, sounds and smells; there is more of a sense of community, a collective exhalation, a time for reflection and recuperation.
Living by the sea, year round, is a uniquely invigorating experience; great pleasure can be taken from wrapping up warm and walking on a deserted beach; you never get bored of the views; there is always something to do, whether exploring the surrounding coastline and neighbouring countryside or seeking recreational activities on and under the water; just sitting on the beach or on the terrace of a quayside cafe is a perfectly valid way to spend an afternoon, unlike anywhere else when just sitting and doing nothing is clearly a waste of time; solutions to most problems can be found by walking down a promenade or inspiration found when sitting in shelter, looking out over the water.
It is a truly rewarding way of life.
